Things could be perfect at home, and then ambition gets in the way. Even though my promotions company in the UK was flourishing, I was still looking for a new challenge. Growing up in Weston-super-Mare, I had a lovely life by the sea, donkey rides on the beach... but it just wasn't enough.

Things could be perfect at home, and then ambition gets in the way. Even though my promotions company in the UK was flourishing, I was still looking for a new challenge. Growing up in Weston-super-Mare, I had a lovely life by the sea, donkey rides on the beach... but it just wasn't enough. It wasn't my ultimate ambition; not by far.

So after a short stint in Dubai, I was offered the opportunity to expand, and set up in Barcelona, which, to be frank, was a relatively straightforward process. You will need a lawyer to apply for your company name, and once you have received a certificate that holds the company name, you then have three months to sort out everything else.

The next step is to take your share capital into a bank, and they will provide you with another certificate that says your company has enough finance to begin trading or operations. And then you will have to take that certificate to the notario (notary) who will sign everything off.

You will subsequently have to obtain a CIF, which is a finance number, for your company. This will take up to a week, and your lawyer will be able to help. This may seem like quite the list, but it is comparatively easier process than in most countries.

Spain is a fantastic place to relocate and live. No one can argue with that climate. But be warned, the manana mentality is no myth: be prepared for things to take twice as long as you are familiar with, and definitely be ready for some pretty awful customer service!
