Car Rental in India

The International Driver's License (IDL) is recognised in India. However, it is almost impossible to rent a car without a driver; and it is not necessarily cheaper to hire a car without one. It is also safer to rent a car with a professional driver. The Embassy recommends that expatriates and tourists rent cars with drivers rather than drive themselves. Car rental, inclusive of driver, is inexpensive by UK standards.

Indian traffic conditions are chaotic; the drivers reckless; the roads often in poor condition. This cannot be overstated. Pot holes and speed breaker bumps are common, and rarely marked. Rocks are commonly left on the road too. Pedestrians, animals, bicycles, ox carts and tractors all use the road at the same time.
